Self-Employed: MPF Contributions Are Tax-Deductible

2026-09-23
Marcus Tang

What are the obligations?

Self-employed persons must join an MPF scheme and contribute — non-compliance is illegal. First conviction: HK$50,000 fine and 6 months’ jail; subsequent: HK$100,000 and 12 months. Late contributions or unreported changes can also draw fines.

What’s the upside?

Mandatory contributions are tax-deductible — effectively the government co-funds your retirement. Ask your trustee for details or visit MPF fund comparison.
