Why Did Longevity Alarm Britain’s Pension System?

How striking were the UK longevity figures?

Late-2010 UK government data showed 10 million Britons — 17% of the population — would live to 100, up from just 11,800 centenarians then to at least 507,000 by 2066. The Department for Work and Pensions counted 3 million under-16s, 55 million aged 16–50, and over 875,000 above 65. Pensions minister Steve Webb admitted longer lives would put unbearable pressure on pensions and the NHS.

How did Britain respond to the pension crunch?

The government pushed reforms for long-term sustainability; employers deferred retirement ages and trimmed benefits, some unilaterally closing generous legacy schemes. The state pension age of 65 was set to rise gradually to 68 within four years.
