Equity funds swept the 2010 MPF top-ten leaderboard, with the best Hong Kong equity fund gaining 24% — the Sun Life First State Hong Kong Equity Fund. According to Morningstar data to 29 December 2010, all ten of the year’s best performers across 409 MPF funds were equity funds, led by Hong Kong and Asian markets. Among 37 Hong Kong equity funds, even the laggard — the Bank of Communications Hang Seng Index constituent fund — returned 5.06%, just behind the Hang Seng Index’s 5.32% full-year gain.
Conservative funds were weakest, with some posting zero returns and the best at just 0.38%. Twenty-two bond funds returned between 1.07% and 7.93%. To compare fees and returns across fund types, visit MPF fund comparison.
Gadbury’s managing director Shirley Xiao said Hong Kong and mainland momentum remained strong heading into 2011, though mainland anti-inflation measures could curb growth; beyond China, Southeast Asia deserved attention while slow-recovering Europe and the US were not priorities. She stayed bullish on equity funds, arguing 2010’s low close set up a better 2011. Convoy’s chief business officer Chan Tsz-kin also favoured Asia, China and Hong Kong, noting last year’s laggards could catch up, and advised reviewing MPF portfolios every quarter or half-year as conditions shifted fast.
