How was one employer punished in 2010?

In October 2010, an employer was fined HK$18,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts for failing to make MPF contributions within the statutory deadline between October 2009 and March 2010. Luk Yuen Hotpot Seafood Restaurant and a senior officer, Chan Kin-ngok, were each fined HK$18,000 and ordered to pay HK$150,000 in arrears.

What are an employer’s legal duties?

Employers must contribute for employees within the deadline; defaults are offences punishable on prosecution. Trustees must monitor and report to the MPFA. Workers who spot defaults should complain to the MPFA to protect their retirement money.
