May 2011 brought four big stories: the government scrapped the HK$6,000 MPF injection for a cash handout, the MPFA reviewed contribution income limits, the “semi-portability” launch slipped to July 2012 as the “Employee Choice Arrangement”, and tougher intermediary regulation was tabled. Financial Secretary John Tsang dropped the injection plan on 2 March, paying HK$6,000 cash to all permanent residents aged 18+ instead.
The renamed “semi-portability”: employees choose their own MPF provider, expected from July 2012, covering about 2.3 million workers.
