MPF research firm MPF Ratings estimates the Mandatory Provident Fund system recorded a net inflow of HK$9.02 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 6.64% year on year but still 27.1% below the five-year quarterly average of HK$12.38 billion. On asset allocation, Hong Kong and China equity funds saw an estimated net outflow of about HK$8.04 billion in Q3, while US equity funds took in more than HK$8.14 billion.
MPF Ratings said the HK$9.02 billion Q3 net inflow reflects continued member contributions, but remains 27.1% below the HK$12.38 billion five-year quarterly average — overall net flow momentum has yet to return to its historical norm.
Hong Kong and China equity funds recorded an estimated net outflow of about HK$8.04 billion in the third quarter, with other markets the main beneficiaries: US equity funds took in more than HK$8.14 billion, while the net inflows into Asia and global equity funds were close to four times their overall market share.
Excluding BCT’s abnormal market-share gain from its ongoing integration of the Principal MPF scheme, HSBC and Sun Life were the quarter’s biggest net-inflow winners in relative terms — each captured an inflow share roughly twice their overall market share.
Smaller players also performed well. MassMutual Asia and China Life each took more than 1% of Q3 net inflows, against total MPF asset market shares of just 0.39% and 0.35% respectively.
As of end-September, MPF returns were +0.5% for the quarter and +6.2% year to date. Total assets stood at about HK$1.68 trillion, equivalent to an average account balance of HK$338,929 across 4.97 million members. Whether the “out of Hong Kong/China, into US equities” flow pattern extends into Q4 is worth watching.
