MPF is a long-term investment — but you still need to review your portfolio

At a cousin’s wedding banquet last month, Ah Chak reminded relatives chatting about MPF investments: although the MPF is a long-term investment, it still needs regular review to make sure the portfolio matches your investment goals at different life stages, your target asset allocation, and your risk tolerance.

Do you need to watch the market like a stock trader?

No — frequent switching does more harm than good. When cousin Kam Yan asked whether she should monitor markets constantly, Ah Chak explained that the MPF is not stocks: frequent fund switching is not a good idea. Reviews are often driven not by market moves but by life-stage changes — family circumstances or career shifts. If your career goes well and you’ve earned enough for retirement, your risk capacity is higher, so staying in aggressive funds may still suit you.

How do you review a portfolio in practice?

Two documents: the fund fact sheet and the annual benefit statement. Trustees must issue a fund fact sheet at least every six months, with the latest fund objectives, top-ten holdings, performance and risk indicators — check whether they still match your original goals; if yes, stay put, if not, consider adjusting. The other key document is the annual benefit statement, issued once a year, showing the past year’s contributions, the account’s fund value at the financial year-end, and the account’s gains or losses for the period and since inception.

What should you watch out for?

Don’t trade short-term; check switching limits. Ah Chak’s reminder: never switch funds on a single fund’s short-term price moves, and don’t try to time the market — buying the dip and selling the top doesn’t work for MPF. Also check how many fund switches your scheme allows and read each fund’s terms.
