What was the 2011 scheme?

In March 2011 the government announced about six million permanent residents aged 18 or above would each get HK$6,000, paid in two tranches via bank transfer or cheque. Eligible people could receive it through a bank account or take a cheque; a HK$200 bonus encouraged early registration or collection.

Why a cash handout?

The original budget’s MPF-account injection had enraged the public; the government made its historic U-turn to cash instead.
