The government proposes lifting the MPF maximum relevant income level from HK$20,000 to HK$25,000, and trade groups have taken their objections to the legislature. The Institution of Dining Art, representing the catering trade, says rising food costs plus the minimum wage have already squeezed the industry — higher contributions would be salt in the wound and dent competitiveness.
Caterers say another hike piles pressure on pressure. With ingredient prices up and the minimum wage in force, the trade argues that raising the MPF ceiling further weakens its ability to compete.
The Chinese Importers’ and Exporters’ Association suggests HK$22,500 instead. The association says HK$25,000 would hurt the SME business environment and proposes HK$22,500 to protect both employers and employees. It also wants the government to tighten supervision of management companies so workers’ contributions aren’t eroded.
