MPF has various investment restrictions that mean investment choices are based on conventional investments of bonds, equities and cash. The restrictions mean that the fund choices cannot invest in commodities such as gold or in markets like Shanghai or Shenzhen. They also mean that unlike some unit trusts they cannot borrow to increase the portfolio size. Sometimes you might be pleased about these restrictions, other times they can be irritating as markets go up that you cannot invest in.
