In May 2011, the HKCTU mobilised a dozen women and children to march demanding universal retirement protection so housewives and part-time women workers would be covered in old age. Marching from Chater Garden to government headquarters under the banner “Recognise mum’s contribution — universal retirement protection now!”, the union cited Census data showing over 210,000 women earned under HK$5,000 a month in 2009 — nearly double the number of men.
Many married women gave up careers for family; even in part-time or casual work, employers need not contribute MPF for them. One courier said a former employer refused contributions, costing her tens of thousands — her MPF balance was just HK$50,000, leaving her anxious about retirement.
Universal retirement protection would cover everyone regardless of employment status; MPF covers only the employed. What workers can do now is choose better funds at MPF fund comparison and grow their own balances.
