Why Did Activists Tell the Chief Executive to Watch His Words on Universal Pensions?

What happened at the May 2011 protest?

On 26 May 2011, the Alliance for Universal Pension marched on the Executive Council demanding Chief Executive Donald Tsang face up to retirement protection, set up universal pensions, launch consultation, and deliver the HK$50 billion seed fund. With placards and street theatre, they mocked Tsang’s earlier LegCo claim that universal protection was “impractical”, accusing him of coasting to retirement himself and ignoring social reality.

What was the case for universal pensions?

Advocates cited rapid ageing and MPF’s low contribution rates and thin protection; a HK$50 billion seed fund would anchor the system and answer the demographic challenge pragmatically.
