Seniors claiming HK$6,000 warned against fraud; Cheung urges trusted helpers for forms, reviews three retirement pillars

The HK$6,000 Scheme has opened for registration, with Hong Kong permanent residents aged 65 or above first in line via banks or post offices. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung reminded elderly applicants to seek help filling in forms only from trusted relatives, friends or volunteer groups — and never to disclose personal data casually, lest it be misused.

How is the government improving retirement protection?

The Central Policy Unit is studying whether the three pillars of retirement protection — CSSA, MPF and personal savings — can sustainably cope with rapid population ageing. Cheung said the government is not ducking the issue and will support the research to refine the system.

Will the minimum wage review come early?

No. Cheung reiterated inflation is not the sole consideration; the overall economic impact matters too. The Minimum Wage Commission will conduct a full review only after a basket of data is collected in next year’s first quarter, submitting recommendations by next November at the latest. Four-plus months in, over 200,000 grassroots workers have benefited, with average wages up 9.7% — a 4% real gain after inflation.

What should seniors watch when claiming the HK$6,000?

Protecting personal data while filling in forms matters most; turn to trusted relatives, social-welfare organisations or official channels with questions. Beyond safeguarding the payout, seniors can learn about how MPF fits into retirement protection for more rounded old-age planning.
