MPF Fund Fees Comparison: Three Tips for Managing Your MPF

The MPF system had been running for over a decade — how should employees manage their MPF well? In late 2011, AIA Pension and Trustee’s senior vice president offered three tips, the most important being an MPF fund fees comparison done right: look at the fund expense ratio (FER), not just the fund management fee.

What is the MPF fund expense ratio?

The MPF fund expense ratio (FER) is a fund’s total expenses as a percentage of its assets, covering management fees, custodian fees, administration charges and other ongoing costs; a higher FER means higher overall costs deducted from members’ returns. As of 2011 the market-average FER was about 1.79%, with some low-fee products already below 1%.

Tip 1: compare FER, not just the management fee

Many employees compare fees by management fee alone — but MPF charges also include custodian and guarantee fees. The FER is the better yardstick:

Way to compareProblem
Management fee onlyMisses custodian, administration and other charges — understates the true cost
Fund expense ratio (FER)Reflects total expenses as % of assets — closer to what is actually deducted

One caveat: FER naturally differs by fund type — equity funds cost more to run than conservative funds. Always compare within the same fund type, or you’ll draw the wrong conclusion. The MPFA website already published every fund’s expense ratio for public comparison back then.

Tip 2: don’t adjust your mix on short-term market noise

MPF is long-term investing — don’t try to guess short-term price moves. By the time investors notice a market rally, fund prices have often already climbed, and switching into equity funds then likely means missing the cheap entry. Instead, pick funds that suit your risk tolerance and financial situation, and stick with the strategy.

Tip 3: assess providers on multiple fronts

When choosing an MPF provider, don’t fixate on management-fee differences. Consider the fund expense ratio, the breadth of fund choice, past fund performance, and whether the service platform is simple and flexible. These directly determine whether every dollar you contribute gets you closer to the retirement you want.

All three tips point to one principle: MPF management is a marathon — won through persistently low costs and discipline, not short-term market calls. To compare fund fees hands-on, visit mpf.hk’s fund browser, or revisit fund basics at mpf.hk’s MPF education hub.
