Turning 30 brings a new life stage: many start families while caring for parents, becoming the household’s financial pillar as risk tolerance gradually falls. AXA Hong Kong’s chief retirement and intermediary sales director Lee Ping-hei explains how members aged 30–50 can adjust MPF strategy to their risk appetite.
Shift gradually from high-risk to lower-risk funds. Keeping risk within bounds means learning diversification: trim equities’ portfolio share — cut equity funds or equity-heavy mixed-asset funds — and add balancing equity-bond mixes, bonds, capital-preservation and conservative funds for diversification. Simply put: if 80% went to equities or growth funds in your youth, dial risk down 10–20% in middle age; with many dependants, a big mortgage or overseas education bills ahead, lean more cautious and solid.
Bond funds aren’t risk-free; guaranteed funds have strings attached. Taming risk steadies medium-to-long-term performance and cushions market volatility’s impact. Bond funds carry low-to-medium risk and the law restricts them to investment-grade bonds — but rating changes, rate moves and currency swings still bite. Most guaranteed funds are conditional: the return guarantee needs specific terms met, like a minimum investment period or withdrawing only at 65 — miss the conditions, lose the guarantee. Conservative funds hold quality short-term interest-bearing securities with relatively low risk, but may lag inflation when it spikes.
Learn each fund’s features; weigh your own risk capacity. Lee advises gathering information first — the MPF website or your trustee — understanding the funds you fancy, then deciding with your risk tolerance and finances in mind.
