How to Register for the HK$6,000 Handout: Eligibility and Steps

In June 2011 the government detailed its “HK$6,000 Scheme” — eligible Hong Kong permanent residents register through banks or post offices to receive HK$6,000.

Who qualifies?

Permanent residents aged 18 or above on or before 31 March 2012. No means test, no taxpayer requirement — everyone eligible gets it, including qualifying Hongkongers overseas.

How do you register and get paid?

Submit a form via a bank or post office; money goes to your account or by cheque. Registration opens 28 August 2011, with banks opening specially that day. Provide ID and bank account details; payouts go out in batches, so there’s no rush.

When does the money arrive?

In batches — early registration means earlier payment. The government pays in registration order, with the first batch expected within weeks of registering. Beware fake registration sites and phone scams: officials never collect personal data by phone.
