How to Build Your MPF Fund Mix Under Employee Choice

The Employee Choice Arrangement lets you pick trustees — but building the fund mix is the real craft. HSBC Insurance’s Chu Wing-yiu broke down MPF fund structures and risk, and how to assemble a mix that fits.

How do MPF funds differ from ordinary funds?

Lower thresholds, narrower scope. A fund pools investors’ money to buy securities toward an investment goal. Versus ordinary mutual funds, MPF funds have lower entry thresholds and narrower investment scope — your few thousand a month buys diversification precisely through pooling.

How is risk graded?

Know it before you pick. Different funds carry different risk-return profiles: equity funds swing hard, bond funds stay steadier, mixed-asset funds sit between. Do a risk assessment first, then mix by age and goals.

What are target-date funds?

A lazy investor’s friend. These automatically dial down risk toward your expected retirement year — aggressive while young, defensive later. Workers with little investment knowledge who don’t want constant portfolio-tending can consider them.

What is the lesson from 2012?

Chu’s 2012 column was many workers’ first “what is a fund” lesson. Semi-portability forced everyone to learn fund selection, and lesson one stands: a fund isn’t a stock — no need to guess ups and downs. It’s a tool; fit is what matters. Some still haven’t taken that class.
