How Do You Protect Yourself When an Agency Collapses?

2011-08-22

What happened in July 2011?

On 1 July 2011, travel agency “Dream Holiday” suddenly closed, stranding hundreds at the airport — the Travel Industry Compensation Fund held about HK$260 million, enough to compensate, but travel insurance was the last line of self-protection. Four moves: read the policy terms first — most cover agency collapse, but check purchase deadlines (before departure or after ticketing); contact the agency or insurer immediately; keep every receipt, refund proof and written confirmations from airlines and hotels; stay calm and get a lawyer for refunds and claims.

What else does travel insurance cover?

Accidental injury/death, money and baggage loss, delays, cancellations, early termination; pre-existing conditions, overseas medical tourism and cosmetic surgery are excluded.

What’s the lesson?

Watch purchase deadlines and terms; keep receipts. (Practical travel-insurance guidance, rewritten bilingually as-is.)
