How Are Travel Insurance Premiums Priced? Age, Destination and Cover Decide

How are travel insurance premiums set? Mainly by age, destination, trip length and benefit limits — cheapest isn’t best.

What drives the premium?

Older, farther, bigger cover — higher price. Seniors pay more; destinations with pricey healthcare (US, Europe) cost more than Southeast Asia; higher limits and add-ons push premiums up.

How do you get value?

Buy for your needs, not the price tag. Frequent travellers may find annual plans cheaper than single-trip buys; high-cost destinations need adequate medical limits; pre-existing conditions need checking against the wording. A cheap premium with thin cover costs more when disaster strikes.

What should you check before buying?

Exclusions and claims procedures. Hazardous activities (skiing, diving) may be excluded or need riders; know what documents claims need and notification deadlines — ask before you buy.
