Australian institutional investors were increasingly buying Asian commercial property to diversify, said LaSalle Investment Management’s Asia-Pacific director David Edwards: many Australian super funds had succeeded in their core home market — overweight Australia paid off this cycle, but the future might differ: “diversification is always important.” Tough, competitive domestic markets prompted the thought: “should I diversify into the fastest-growing market?” Based in Hong Kong since the early 1990s, Edwards said Asian property was back to growth; pre-crisis investors had “gone up the risk curve,” and were now moving back to core.
