Fund Commentary

Hong Kong stock market fell sharply in the first quarter of 2020. Market began the new year with positive sentiment given the signing of a phase one trade deal between the U.S. and China. Until investors received official news about the outbreak of a new coronavirus in China, market retreated quickly as it was hard to gauge the economic impact in the early stage of the outbreak. Following a sharp fall in January, stock market continued climbing in the first couple of weeks of February given declining rates of new infection with effective containment efforts made by the Chinese authorities. However, fears of negative effects of global growth quickly accumulated as new infection cases kept adding in the U.S. and Europe, dragging down Hong Kong market towards the end of March. Besides, concerns about global economic recession alongside declining energy demand hit energy market strongly, led crude oil prices plunged more than 60% in the first quarter as major producers failed to reach a supply reduction plan. Over the first quarter of 2020, the Hang Seng Index and Hang Seng China Enterprises Index lost 16.27% and 14.09%, respectively.
