Fund Commentary

CSI Hong Kong 100 Total Return Index dropped with the Hong Kong stock market in the first quarter of 2020. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), capital remained stable in the first quarter of 2020, with the aggregate balance of monetary base staying at around HKD 54 billion. The composite interest rate, which is a measure of the average cost of funds for banks, decreased by 2 basis points to 0.99% at the end of February 2020. As to the domestic economy, the provisionally estimated value of total retail sales for the first two months of 2020 tumbled by 31.8% compared with the same period in 2019. In particular, the sales of luxury goods dropped by 58.6% year-on-year (YoY) for the first two months of 2020. The value of total exports of goods decreased by 12.0% YoY for the first two months of 2020 while the value of imports of goods decreased by 9.3% YoY in the same period. For the first two months of 2020, year-on-year decreases were registered in the values of total exports to some major destinations, in particular the USA, Japan, Germany, and Singapore. The Fund underperformed the benchmark CSI HK 100 Index in the first quarter of 2020.
