You‘ve been contributing to MPF for decades. So when can you actually take the money out? This is one question every Hong Kong worker should have the answer to.

Standard retirement age: 65

Once you reach 65, you can withdraw your MPF in two ways:

Lump sum: Take everything out in one go

Instalments: Withdraw by year or month — your remaining balance stays invested

🚨 Early withdrawal exceptions:

In specific circumstances, you can access MPF before age 65:

Permanent departure from Hong Kong: Must swear an affidavit confirming no intention to return, and provide evidence of visa/immigration status in destination

Terminal illness: Certified by a registered doctor with life expectancy of 12 months or less

Small balance account: Total MPF balance under HK$5,000 and ceased mandatory contributions for at least 12 months

Total permanent incapacity

💡 Special case: ORSO schemes at age 60

Members of occupational retirement schemes (ORSO) may have the option to withdraw from age 60 upon ceasing employment.

📊 Pro tip:

MPF withdrawal procedures can be time-consuming. Start your enquiries at least 3 months before your intended withdrawal date via the eMPF platform or your MPF provider.
