You‘ve been contributing to MPF for decades. So when can you actually take the money out? This is one question every Hong Kong worker should have the answer to.
✅ Standard retirement age: 65
Once you reach 65, you can withdraw your MPF in two ways:
• Lump sum: Take everything out in one go
• Instalments: Withdraw by year or month — your remaining balance stays invested
🚨 Early withdrawal exceptions:
In specific circumstances, you can access MPF before age 65:
• Permanent departure from Hong Kong: Must swear an affidavit confirming no intention to return, and provide evidence of visa/immigration status in destination
• Terminal illness: Certified by a registered doctor with life expectancy of 12 months or less
• Small balance account: Total MPF balance under HK$5,000 and ceased mandatory contributions for at least 12 months
• Total permanent incapacity
💡 Special case: ORSO schemes at age 60
Members of occupational retirement schemes (ORSO) may have the option to withdraw from age 60 upon ceasing employment.
📊 Pro tip:
MPF withdrawal procedures can be time-consuming. Start your enquiries at least 3 months before your intended withdrawal date via the eMPF platform or your MPF provider.
