Why won’t the government do universal retirement protection?

Chief Executive Donald Tsang told LegCo universal retirement protection is too divisive for near-term consensus and would mean tax hikes plus forced employer-employee funding — not viable now; instead the government is reviewing MPF improvements with the MPFA. Fewer young supporters, bigger elder costs: the structural math is stark.

What does “improving MPF” mean?

Transparency, lower fees, more choice. Until reforms land, the practical move is actively managing your own account — don’t bet retirement on policy debates.
